Main purpose of job:

We are looking for a dynamic digital communications professional to design, drive and deliver digital communications for the British Deputy High Commission in Bangalore, representing the UK diplomatic presence across the south of India.

The Digital Communications Officer will be responsible for promoting the work of the Deputy High Commission in Bangalore and beyond, including working with our posts in Chennai and Hyderabad. They will be based in Bangalore but join the Press and Communications network at the British High Commission, which provides an intimate yet fast-paced work environment. They will regularly interact with the Deputy High Commissioner and the organisation’s senior leadership team. The role requires exceptional inter-personal skills, skills with content editing software, the ability to capture quality content and an understanding of social media channel management.

The individual will also be required to fulfil internal communications requirements for the network across the South of India, although digital communications remain the primary function of the role.

In Bangalore, you will join a newly formed communications team of three, once recruited, covering the entire south region. The team will be accountable to the communications team from the British High Commission, New Delhi.

The individual may also be required to travel across South India on occasion to support delivery of major communications moments. They may also be required occasional travel to New Delhi.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:

  1. Digital Communications – content capture and production (40%): You will have ability in editing software to produce quality graphics, photography and video for use across our social media channels.
  2. Digital Communications – social media management (40%): You will be responsible for day-to-day management of the UK government’s presence on social media across southern India. You will also be responsible for planning and delivering digital communications campaigns and independently designing and delivering digital communications. You will provide communications advice to senior stakeholders across South India, using analytics to provide insights that may help shape content strategy.
  3. Internal Communications (10%): You’ll play a key role in supporting the network’s internal communications, with direction from the Internal Communications lead based in Delhi.
  4. Strategic Relationship Management (5%): You will build a network of influencers and digital stakeholders in southern India. Following our news and digital strategy, you will suggest and explore opportunities for collaborations and public engagement to grow our audience and disseminate our messaging further for higher impact. This will require independent decision-making in certain areas, alongside close stakeholder management to influence communications outcomes.
  5. Corporate, learning and development (5%): We take learning and development seriously and support staff to develop their skills further, where it is relevant to their role, and supports the organisation.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience  

Essential On Arrival:

  • Two years of work experience in a social media marketing or multimedia production role or similar role
  • Social media channel management and optimisation experience
  • Strong knowledge of desktop publishing and multimedia editing software including Canva, Adobe Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Final Cut Pro.
  • Proven specialised expertise in design, creation and deployment of digital content across digital/social media platforms. Fluency/expertise in use of cross-digital skills (skill in still photography, videography and graphic designing for use on digital platforms and skill in loading content to/deploying the full range of social media platforms/channels – X, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook)
  • Extensive contacts/ and understanding of English & Vernacular Digital Media in the region.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience  

Desirable skills:

  • Internal communications experience
  • Experience working in a large, dispersed network or organisation.
  • Applicants will additionally be passionate about community, conversations and getting into the nuances of how conversation and engagement work, both online and offline.
  • In addition to English language requirement, candidates would desirably have proficiency in one or more southern India languages (Tamil; Malayalam; Kannada).

Other benefits and conditions of employment  

For British High Commission candidates, the Country Based Staff BHC Terms & Conditions will apply.

For other than BHC Candidates, salary will be all-inclusive of INR 77,619 per month plus 12% Provident Fund and 6% Superannuation Fund.

Additionally, the BHC offers a great benefits package that includes annual domiciliary medical cover, plus a Group Hospitalisation Scheme with INR 500,000 floater cover for your immediate family which includes self, spouse/partner and children up to an age of 25 years and irrespective of age, only if with, physical or mental disability.

No relocation or any other related costs or assistance will be provided. FCDO does not pay for any travelling, accommodation & relocation expenses incurred and/or accept any financial risk, including cancellation or reschedule costs

Please note - BHC does not deduct tax at source and employees are required to ensure that any requirements of local income-tax law are complied with in full. Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g., some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
