Accessibility statement

Last updated 14 Aug 2026

DevelopmentWala exists to widen access to opportunities in the social and development sector. A platform that is difficult to use with assistive technology works against that purpose, so accessibility is treated as part of the product rather than an afterthought.

This statement sets out where we currently stand — honestly, including what is not yet right.

1. Standard We Work To

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA.

Current status: partially conformant.

“Partially conformant” means that while much of the platform meets the standard, we have not completed a formal third-party audit and some parts of the site do not yet fully conform. We would rather say that plainly than claim a level of compliance we have not evidenced.

2. What We Have Done

Measures currently built into the platform include:

  • Semantic HTML with a correct heading order, so screen-reader users can navigate a page by its structure.
  • Text alternatives for meaningful images, and decorative graphics hidden from assistive technology so they are not announced as noise.
  • Accessible names on icon-only controls, so a button that shows only an icon is still announced meaningfully.
  • Keyboard operability: interactive controls can be reached and used without a mouse, and visible focus styles show where you are.
  • State communicated to assistive technology, not just visually — for example follow buttons and filter chips announce whether they are currently active.
  • Form fields with associated labels, and errors announced rather than shown only as red text.
  • Colour contrast checked against the AA threshold for body text and interface controls.
  • Responsive layouts tested down to 320px width, so the site can be zoomed or used on small screens without horizontal scrolling.
  • Respect for reduced-motion preferences, so animation is minimised for users who ask their system for that.

3. Known Limitations

We are aware of the following, and they are on our list to address:

  • No formal third-party accessibility audit has been carried out. Our assessment is based on internal testing only.
  • Rich-text descriptions are written by the organisations posting them. We cannot guarantee that headings, links or lists inside submitted content follow accessible practice.
  • Documents uploaded by users — CVs, brochures and attachments — are supplied by third parties and may not be accessible. We do not modify them.
  • Some complex interfaces, particularly data-dense dashboard tables and charts, have had less assistive-technology testing than the main public pages.
  • Third-party embedded content and payment pages are governed by the accessibility of those providers.

4. Assistive Technology and Browsers

The platform is built to work with current versions of major browsers on desktop and mobile, together with the assistive technology built into those platforms — including screen readers, browser zoom, high-contrast modes and speech input.

If you use an older browser or a specialised tool and something does not work, please tell us. Reports about specific combinations are more useful to us than general ones.

5. Reporting a Barrier

If you encounter something on DevelopmentWala.org that you cannot use, please contact us. We treat accessibility reports as bug reports, not as feedback.

It helps if you can tell us:

  • The page address where you met the problem
  • What you were trying to do
  • The browser, device and any assistive technology you were using

We aim to acknowledge accessibility reports within 5 working days and will tell you what we intend to do and by when. If a fix will take time, we will offer an alternative way to complete the task in the meantime.

6. Alternative Ways to Reach Us

If any part of the platform prevents you from applying for an opportunity or contacting an organisation, we will help you do it another way. Write to us or message us on WhatsApp and we will assist directly.
